Passphrase drift occurs when a wallet holder creates a new BIP39 passphrase — perhaps after reading a security article or returning from a trip — but continues mentally associating the wallet with the older passphrase they used for years.
During verification, we ask clients to state aloud which passphrase variant they believe is active before entering it. In roughly one in eight first-time visits, the stated variant does not match the one that actually unlocks the wallet.
The holder is not careless. Human memory favours the most frequently used pattern, even after a deliberate change.
Our binder records passphrase versions by date and context — “Variant B, created March 2024 after firmware update” — without writing the passphrase itself. On each quarterly visit, we confirm which variant unlocked the device and cross out superseded entries.
If you changed your passphrase in the past eighteen months and have not verified access since, schedule a check before assuming your muscle memory is accurate.
